What is comprehensive motor vehicle insurance?
Motor liability insurance is mandatory for all vehicles. In the event of an accident, it covers all personal injuries and any property damage suffered by the innocent party. However, motor liability insurance alone is not enough to protect your vehicle against vandalism, a broken windscreen or damage to the vehicle while parking. For these, you need comprehensive motor vehicle insurance. Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance is a voluntary motor insurance covering you against various types of loss or damage to your vehicle.
What does comprehensive motor vehicle insurance cover?
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance varies, depending on the level of cover you choose – the more extensive the option, the better the coverage against different losses. The best comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for a passenger car includes four additional cover options. Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance supplemented by additional cover options insures your car against vandalism, windscreen damage, fire, technical malfunctions, collisions, driving off the road, and damage to the car in indoor car parks, for example. Additional covers may include comprehensive salvage cover, i.e. Super Salvage, which extensively covers expenses arising from salvaging a vehicle.
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for cars: Medium Motor Insurance, Standard Motor Insurance and Super Motor Insurance
Our comprehensive motor vehicle insurance options for passenger cars, lorries and vans are Medium Motor Insurance, Standard Motor Insurance and Super Motor Insurance.
The most inexpensive option, Medium Motor Insurance, covers against fire and theft, for example. You can also customise Medium Motor Insurance to cover vandalism to your car. In Medium Motor Insurance for a passenger car, you can also include cover against windscreen and window damage. Medium Motor Insurance does not, however, cover damages due to driving off the road, for example.
Standard Motor Insurance covers damages due to driving off the road and automatically includes cover against vandalism. Standard Motor Insurance’s Collision Cover provides cover if an unknown party damages your parked car in an indoor car park or street parking, for example. When claiming compensation from Collision Cover, you lose your insurance’s no-claims bonus.
The most comprehensive option, Super Motor Insurance, covers the above types of parking damages from the optional parking cover for passenger cars without loss of no-claims bonus. You can also expand Super Motor Insurance with optional covers, such as consequential loss cover, windscreen cover and Super Salvage for a higher redemption amount.
What is the best option for my car?
Your choice of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance is affected not only by your own needs but also by the age of your vehicle and its value. For a new and valuable car, you should take out a policy that is as comprehensive as possible. For an older car, fewer covers may be sufficient. Below are a few rules of thumb that may be helpful in deciding on the right comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for your car:
- Medium Motor Insurance is suitable for older cars.
- Standard Motor Insurance is suitable for cars that are worth up to 15,000 euros and 3‒19 years old.
- Super Motor Insurance is excellently suited for new or relatively new cars, but also for any car that is less than 15 years old.
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for other vehicles: Maxi Motor Insurance and Medium Motor Insurance
When you want to insure a motorcycle, campervan, moped, light quadricycle, all-terrain vehicle, snowmobile, caravan or light trailer, you can choose from two comprehensive motor vehicle insurance options: Maxi Motor Insurance and Medium Motor Insurance.
Medium Motor Insurance is suited for all vehicles up to 25 years old. Maxi Motor Insurance is best suited for motorcycles subject to registration as well as campervans, mopeds, quad bikes, snowmobiles and light quadricycles up to 15 years old and for caravans and light trailers (max. 3500 kg).
Tractors aged 0–50 years and not in production use can be insured against fire, theft and legal expenses. For an unregistered motorcycle, you can take out Medium Motor Insurance without optional additional coverage.

Collision Cover
Collision Cover is a part of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance that offers cover against collision, swerving off the road and damage caused by a road collapse, for example. Collision Cover is also colloquially referred to as collision insurance. Collision Cover is also closely linked to comprehensive motor vehicle insurance bonus, as the number of losses covered by Collision Cover affects your earned bonus, and the premium for Collision Cover is lower based on the number of insurance periods without any claims.
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance bonus
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance collision cover begins with a bonus of 70%. Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance bonuses increase for no-claims insurance periods by 10% a year up to 70%. The accumulated comprehensive motor vehicle insurance bonus reduces the collision cover premium.
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance bonus increases when a vehicle has been used in traffic during an insurance period for at set number of days without any losses covered under Collision Cover. The number of days is 120 days for cars and 90 days for motorcycles. Please note that comprehensive motor vehicle insurance bonuses decrease with each loss indemnified under Collision Cover by 20 percentage points.
For example, if your comprehensive motor vehicle insurance bonus at Pohjola Insurance is 70% and you claim a loss, your bonus falls to 60%. Claims filed for losses due to storm or hail, for example, will not reduce your bonus.
Price of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance
The price of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance is determined by the vehicle’s properties, and your details. Vehicle-specific factors affecting the price of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance include the tare weight or total weight, cylinder volume, power-to-weight ratio (kW/kg), age and municipality in which you use the vehicle. The make and body type of the car and the chosen deductible also affect the price of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance. The higher the deductible, the lower the payment.
Your history as policyholder and the bonuses you have accumulated are examples of personal data that affect the price of your comprehensive motor vehicle insurance. The scope of coverage you choose for the insurance and the deductible in collision cover also affect the insurance’s price. A policy with extensive coverage is often costlier than a more limited option.

Terms like these, e.g. super motor vehicle insurance usually refer to an insurance providing the widest coverage against adversities, in short, to the best comprehensive motor vehicle insurance available.
The most comprehensive motor vehicle insurance policies offered by Pohjola Insurance are the Super Motor Insurance for cars or the Maxi Motor Insurance for campervans or motorcycles.
Please note that the different types of cover included in comprehensive motor vehicle insurance policies may also be referred to as insurance, such as windscreen insurance, collision insurance and theft insurance. In Pohjola Insurance comprehensive motor vehicle insurance policies, these are treated as separate covers. If, for example, you want to insure your vehicle with collision insurance and theft insurance, you should select a comprehensive motor vehicle insurance policy that includes Collision Cover and Theft Cover.
Seasonal rating according to the riding season
Seasonal rating is applied to motor liability insurance and Maxi Motor Insurance policies for motorcycles, mopeds, all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles, as well as to the Maxi Motor Insurance policies for caravans. The premiums are lower during months when a vehicle is unlikely to be used.
When you use your vehicle only during the season typical for such vehicles – for example, you ride your motorcycle only from spring to autumn – this is reflected in the premium. This means that you do not have to decommission the vehicle for the winter, even if you do not use it. However, if you will not be using your motorcycle through all of the summer season, you can of course decommission it and receive a refund for the insurance premium.
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance and OP bonuses
As an OP cooperative bank owner-customer, you will benefit from a number of benefits and from the OP bonuses that accumulate from your banking and insurance transactions. Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance and motor liability insurance also accumulate valuable OP bonuses. Validity of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance abroad
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance is valid throughout Europe and in Green Card countries outside Europe, with a few exceptions. Please note that abroad the deductible of your comprehensive motor vehicle insurance is higher. The Pohjola Repair Advisor service is included in comprehensive motor vehicle insurance
You can use the free Pohjola Repair Advisor service if you have taken out Pohjola Motor Vehicle Insurance including comprehensive motor vehicle insurance. In the event of motor vehicle damage covered by Pohjola Motor Vehicle Insurance, you can take your car to the nearest Pohjola Repair Advisor shop. The Repair Advisor will repair your car and will make the loss report on your behalf. You will only have to pay for the deductible, if any, and Pohjola Insurance will be directly charged for the remaining amount.
