Card security – Can I get a card without contactless payment?

From 1 April 2023, all cards granted by OP include contactless payment.

If your card was granted before 1 April 2023 and does not include contactless payment, you may continue using the card until it expires. After this, you will receive a new card with contactless payment.

Is contactless payment secure?

Yes. Contactless payment makes card payment more secure, as contactless payment does not require you to use your PIN. There is a smaller risk of phishing, meaning your PIN will not fall into the wrong hands.

Card readers do still require you to occasionally approve the purchase using your PIN. This verifies that the card is in the possession of the correct person.

Are you worried that your card could be used for criminal purposes?

You can sleep well at night, as it is impossible to remotely read all the data required to make a functional copy of your card. You should still use common sense: avoid using the card if you have any doubts about the level of data security at a shop.

Changing the card – How can I switch my card, say, from OP Classic to OP Gold?

If you want to change the card type, for example, from a payment card to a credit card or a credit card with more additional services, do as follows:

  1. Select the credit card or payment card best suited to your needs
  2. Fill in the application directly at op.fi or call our our customer service for cards
  3. You’ll receive your new card within 1–2 weeks.
  4. When you’ve received the new card and seen that it works, you can cancel your old card. You can repay the credit on your old card in normal monthly payments in accordance with your repayment plan.

If your card application is rejected, contact our Customer Service.

When applying for a new card, your old card’s credit limit may affect the credit limit granted to the new card. You can raise the new card’s credit limit after you’ve started to use the card and cancelled the old card.

Changes to the card – How do I change the name on my card?

You can’t order a card with your new name until your new name is shown as updated on the op.fi service. Your new name will be updated in the bank’s systems after you have registered it with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.

Ordering a card at op.fi is easy. Log in with OP’s user IDs and select Kortin uusiminen (Card renewal) from the card settings and there Tilaa kortti uudella nimellä (Order a card with a new name) under Nimeni on vaihtunut (My name has changed). If you use a name other than your first name or you do not have access to OP's digital services, contact our Customer Service to change the name.

We will charge for the name change a fee based on our Charges and Fees.

Credit – Can I pay a bill with credit or transfer credit to my account?

You can’t pay bills directly with a credit card or with credit. If you like, you can transfer credit to your bank account and then pay the bill from your account.

How to transfer OP Visa or Mastercard credit card’s credit to an account:

  • On OP-mobile: Select a card – Select Transfer to account, or use My transfer
  • On the op.fi service (in Finnish): Log in with OP’s user IDs  Omat kortit (My cards) – Select a card – Siirrä luottoa tilille (Transfer credit to account), or use the Siirto omalle tilille (Transfer to own account) function

Transfers are subject to a charge in accordance with the list of charges and fees. You can find the valid list of service charges and fees at op.fi/service-charges. Note that the Product Protection Insurance does not apply to bill payments made from an account.

Features – What’s the difference between debit and credit payments?

Debit payments are debited from a bank account. Credit payments are debited from a credit account. You’ll receive a bill for your credit payments once a month. Once you’ve received the bill, you can take advantage of either the interest- and cost-free payment term and pay off the entire amount in full or the credit facility and pay the bill in instalments.

We have compiled frequently asked questions about credit card billing and answers to them on a separate page.

Card security – I don’t recognise all of my card transactions. What should I do?

The name of the retailer shown on the bill isn’t always the same as the name of the place of purchase. Keep the receipts showing where the card has been used until receiving the bill and checking the transactions.

If your bill has an inexplicable or extra transaction, please contact our Customer Service as soon as possible through the chat or by phone. The chat is open longer. You can manage card-related matters in the chat on weekdays from 8.00 to 22.00.

Features – What’s the difference between offline and online cards?

All OP cards are offline cards, except for OP Basic, which is an online card. Whenever you pay with an OP Basic card, the payment reader will contact your bank to check that there is money in your account. If the payment reader can’t connect to the bank, it won’t be able to check your account and won’t accept the card payment. For this reason, an online card doesn’t always work on trains, ships, aeroplanes or, for example, at ATMs. Offline cards work in such cases. Mobile payments using services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay work in the same locations as the card added to the payment service. OP mobile does not send notifications about offline card transactions – situations in which a payment reader doesn’t contact the bank.

Paying with the card – With which cards can I pay abroad?

You can use all OP payment cards to make payments abroad. In some countries, card payment is still rare and cash is used more commonly.

Paying with the card – What should I do if my card expires during the journey?

If your card expires, say, 05/23 and you are on a journey half of the month, you can safely use the card until the last day of May. So, the card is valid through the last day of the month shown on the card. You’ll get a new card before the expiry of your old card, generally about one month before the expiry date.

If you intend to travel for a longer time, it is advisable to renew your card before leaving. Do that well in advance before your current card expires, or at least 2.5 months before the expiry date. This is how you ensure that you’ll have a new card before you leave on a journey.

If you, however, order a new card when the expiry date of your current card is less than 2.5 months, you will get two cards. This is because you have already been automatically ordered a replacement card. You can start using the card you ordered yourself, with a longer validity period. You can destroy the card sent to you automatically by cutting it in half across the chip and magnetic stripe.

Paying with the card – Can I still use the card during its last validity month?

If your card expires, say, 05/23, you can safely use it until the last day of May. So, the card is valid through the last day of the month shown on the card.

You will receive a new card before your current one expires.

Credit – How can I increase my credit card’s credit limit?

You can increase the credit limit in the op.fi service or on OP-mobile.

Card security – My card is lost or stolen. What should I do?

If your credit or debit card is lost or stolen, call OP Deactivation Service immediately on 0100 0555, or +358 100 0555 if you call from abroad. The service is open 24/7. When you call the Deactivation Service, you don’t need your card’s number; your personal ID code is all you need. Your liability ends once you’ve reported your card lost or stolen, and you won’t lose your money if anyone uses your card.

If you cannot call telephone service numbers from your subscription, you can cancel your card through the chat on weekdays from 8.00 to 22.00.

Your card stops working immediately once you report it lost or stolen. Cancelling the card is final and cannot be reversed. You will be automatically ordered a new card and PIN to replace the lost card. You get the new card and PIN within about two weeks.

If you find the card you’ve reported lost or stolen, don't use it but wait for the new card. Destroy the old card by cutting the chip and magnetic stripe in two.

Card security – How do I change my card’s spending and withdrawal limits?

It’s advisable to set daily maximum spending and withdrawal limits for your payment card as protection against loss and fraudulent use of the card. You can set different

spending and withdrawal limits for your card’s credit facility (credit) and for payments debited directly from your account (debit).

If you have an OP user ID and are aged over 15, you can change the daily limits easily and quickly yourself on OP-mobile or op.fi unless you have the OP Business Debit card.

Change your card’s spending and withdrawal limits by logging into op.fi

My card or PIN doesn’t work – What should I do?

If your card doesn’t work, the reason is usually the card’s spending/withdrawal limit, the available credit facility, reaching the card’s expiry date or the card becoming locked. If your card doesn’t work, you can usually solve the problem yourself.

Cancelling a card – How do I cancel an unnecessary card?

If your new card has the same card number and PIN as your previous card or your card has been replaced because of a lost or stolen card, you don’t have to separately cancel your old card. You only need to destroy the old card by cutting it into pieces so that the chip and magnetic stripe are destroyed.

If, however, you have switched your card to another OP card, say, an OP Classic card to an OP Gold card, you can cancel your old card if you like so that you won’t have to pay service charges for two cards. When you’ve received the new card and seen that it works, you can cancel the old card.

How to cancel a card:

  • On OP-mobile: Select the card – Settings – Cancel card
  • If you don’t have OP-mobile, you can also cancel a card by logging into the op.fi service and opening the chat (in Finnish). In the chat, let us know that you want to cancel a card and then follow the instructions. To cancel a card, you’ll only need the last four digits of the card to be cancelled.

If you have unintentionally paid too much to your credit card’s credit account, meaning that the account is in credit, transfer it from the credit account to your bank account before cancelling the card. Transfers are subject to a charge in accordance with the list of charges and fees.

After cancelling the card, destroy it by cutting it carefully into pieces so that the chip and magnetic stripe are destroyed.

Changes to the card – Are card details updated automatically to streaming services?

All payment cards are linked to either the Visa or Mastercard service which update card details automatically to Netflix, Spotify, Google, iTunes and others.

This automatic update makes life easier and ensures a seamless continuation of services while an expiring or a damaged card is being replaced, for example.

Many service providers are already using automatic update, and more are joining in constantly.

If a card is deactivated as lost or stolen or when the card details are at risk, the customer must update the renewed card's details with any services they use.

Paying with the card – Where can I find the card numbers and the CVC security code?

On OP’s combination cards activated before 2023, the credit card's number, or credit number, is on the front of the card. The credit card’s three-digit CVC security code is next to the signature field on the back of the card.

A debit card’s number, or debit number, is on the back of the card. Its three-digit CVC security code is right next to the card number.

On OP’s combination cards activated in 2023 or later, the credit card's credit number, debit card's debit number and both security codes are on the back of the card, clearly marked.
