Price of motor vehicle insurance - How much does motor vehicle insurance cost?
The price depends on the type of vehicle, kilometres driven and type of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance you select. The price of motor vehicle insurance is always individual and is influenced by, for example:
- The vehicle's details: Make, model, cylinder volume and age.
- Your kilometres driven: Driving less during the year can mean a lower insurance premium.
- Scope of insurance cover: For example, Super Motor Insurance provides the most extensive cover, while Medium Motor Insurance is a more affordable basic option.
- Discounts: When buying a new comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for a passenger car in the online store, you receive a 20% online buyer discount on the first insurance period.
If you are an OP cooperative bank owner-customer, your OP bonuses are also used to cover insurance premiums. In 2025, you will receive 40% more OP bonuses compared to the normal level off 2022.

Is the cheapest motor vehicle insurance always the best?
The cheapest motor vehicle insurance may be suitable for older cars and those driving only occasionally, but a more extensive insurance can save money and effort in case of a loss. You can choose various additional coverages for the comprehensive insurance, such as:
- Parking Cover, which compensates you if your parked vehicle is damaged by an unknown party.

What is covered?

What kind of motor vehicle insurance suits me?
Each passenger car to be used in traffic requires a statutory motor liability insurance, which can be supplemented by a comprehensive motor vehicle insurance that suits you and your car. When selecting comprehensive motor vehicle insurance, you should account for the value and age of your car as well as the risks you want to be covered for.
We recommend you to take out Super Motor Insurance, if:
- Your car is new or relatively new or 15 years old at most

The best motor vehicle insurance helps in the event of loss or damage. When you insure your car with Pohjola motor vehicle insurance including comprehensive motor vehicle insurance, the Pohjola Repair Advisor service will assist you free of charge. In the event of motor vehicle damage, you can take your car to the nearest Pohjola Repair Advisor shop. The Repair Advisor will fix your car and submit a loss report on your behalf. You will only have to pay for the possible deductible when visiting the repair shop and the Repair Advisor will charge Pohjola Insurance directly for the rest.

You can easily switch your motor vehicle insurance to another insurance company any time – even in the middle of the insurance period. When you purchase a motor vehicle insurance policy from our online store, we will handle the switch for you and terminate your old insurance policy. When you are the owner or holder of the vehicle, we will also automatically forward the updated information to the Traficom Vehicular and Driver Data Register.
The motor vehicle insurance bonus is formed by combining the motor liability insurance bonus with the comprehensive motor vehicle insurance collision cover no-claims bonus. Motor liability insurance bonus is based on your personal insurance and claims history, which takes into account how long you have had vehicles insured under your name, as well as whether any insurance claims have been made for the vehicles.
A passenger car's motor liability insurance bonus will increase more quickly than previously, and decrease more moderately if an accident occurs. The motor liability insurance starting bonus is at least 40%, with 80% the maximum. Bonus percentages you have achieved can also be used for any other car you have.
You will always receive a full initial bonus of 70% for the collision cover of your comprehensive motor vehicle insurance. A claim compensated under Collision Cover will decrease the collision cover bonus by 10 percentage points. Claims filed for losses due to storm or hail, for example, will not reduce your bonus. If you need you a certificate of your vehicles’ insurance and claims history, you can order it from the Finnish Motor Insurers' Centre. You can prove your claims history to a foreign insurance company.

Becoming an owner-customer and member contribution
Your current customer relationship and any user ID in your use affects you becoming an owner-customer.
- If you are an OP cooperative bank’s customer and have OP’s user ID, you can become an owner-customer by logging into the op.fi service. Become an owner-customer

Membership cooperative contribution
When joining us, you will pay an ordinary cooperative contribution as a one-time contribution, no other payments exist. In most banks, the amount of the membership cooperative contribution is 100 euros. You can find the amount of the membership cooperative contribution on the owner-customer application and in your OP cooperative bank.
If ever you decide to stop being an owner-customer, your membership contribution will be refunded to you in full. The cooperative contribution will be refunded after one year has lapsed from the end of the financial year during which the owner-customer membership was terminated.
However, OP cooperative banks have the right to refuse to refund the contributions according to the bank's rules. You can check the rules of the OP cooperative bank on the bank's op.fi page or in the head office.
Who can become an owner-customer?
Any person, entity or foundation using OP Financial Group’s services, irrespective of their nationality, can become an owner-customer.
Child as an owner-customer
A child can become an owner-customer. All guardians of the child sign together their underage child’s application for an owner-customer membership. By doing so, the parents also give their consent that their child will begin to earn OP bonuses.
If the membership contribution is paid using proceeds of the child’s own work, the child can him/herself sign the membership application and pay the membership contribution.
Owner-customer terminates the membership
The owner-customer has, at any time, the right to terminate their owner-customer membership by informing their OP cooperative bank of this in writing. The owner-customer membership termination date is the date on which the OP cooperative bank has received the termination notice.
Death of owner-customer
An owner-customer membership will terminate on the death of the owner-customer. In the distribution or partition of the deceased person’s estate, the death estate can transfer the deceased person’s owner-customer membership, generally either to widow/widower or heir.
An OP cooperative bank’s owner-customer membership is a valuable and unconventional gift that keeps on giving. It is an excellent present for a birthday or a graduation, for example.
Ask your OP cooperative bank for instructions on how to gift an owner-customer membership. If the gift's recipient is a minor and both parents are the child's guardians, the parents must sign the minor's application for owner-customer membership together.
