Managing insurance matters by power of attorney

Managing the insurance matters of another person is possible in certain situations if that person has authorised you with a power of attorney. See below for instructions on authorisation by power of attorney and information on situations where a power of attorney can be used.

Authorisation by power of attorney

In certain cases, it may be necessary to authorise another person to manage your insurance and claims matters on your behalf. Depending on the situation, you can authorise a person of your choice to manage your insurance matters with one of the following powers of attorney:

Power of attorney for the management of insurance and claims matters

Power of attorney for the management of insurance and claims matters for a death estate

Representation based on continuing power of attorney

See below for more information on powers of attorney for insurance matters

Power of attorney for the management of insurance and claims matters

The power of attorney for the management of insurance and claim matters authorises the holder to handle insurance and claims for the principal, with the exception of the right to appoint beneficiaries, fill in health declarations, or authorise a third person. The holder of the power of attorney can view your insurance policies when they are logged in at op.fi with their personal user ID. The holder of a power of attorney can manage affairs by phone, online at op.fi or in person at our bank branches.

You can grant a power of attorney for the management of insurance services and claims online at op.fi: Insurance - Power of attorney for insurance services - Add a new power of attorney. On this page, you can also view any powers of attorney that you have received and authorised and end a previously authorised power of attorney.

Log in and grant a power of attorney

If you do not have online banking user IDs at any bank or you wish to grant a power of attorney for the management of an individual claim, you can grant a printed power of attorney for the management of all your insurance policies and claims or for an individual claim. You can deliver the completed and signed printed power of attorney by mail to the following address:

Power of attorney for managing the affairs of a death estate

In order to manage or change death estate insurance matters, you need not only an extract from the population register or an estate inventory but also a power of attorney, entitling all or selected distributees of the estate to manage the death estate’s insurance matters. If you decide not to draw up a power of attorney, all of the distributees must be present when the estate’s insurance affairs are handled. You can send us the death estate’s documents (extract from the population register, estate inventory deed and attachments and power of attorney) easily online. By submitting the documents well in advance, you ensure that your appointment goes smoothly.

You can submit the death estate's documents digitally here

Alternatively, you can mail the death estate's documents to the following address:

Pohjola Insurance Ltd

Tunnus 5019075

00003 VASTAUSLÄHETYS

Once the death estate's necessary documents have been submitted, it will take about 2 weeks to complete the checks, after which the person authorised to manage the death estate's affairs can contact the customer service to manage the estate's affairs.

Legal guardian and representation based on continuing power of attorney

In the event that your capacity is reduced by a difficult illness, accident or old age to the point that you are unable to personally manage your affairs, you may require a legal guardian or representative with a continuing power of attorney. A legal guardian is appointed by a local register office or a court of law. The legal guardian may be a private individual, such as a close relative or other next of kin, or a public legal guardian.

In the continuing power of attorney, you specify the matters to which the power of attorney applies and name the persons you wish to authorise.  The representative based on a continuing power of attorney must be a private individual.

By appointing a representative with a continuing power of attorney, you can take precautions in advance in the event that your capacity is reduced, for example. It is advisable that you establish representation based on a continuing power of attorney well in advance, in other words when you are still legally competent and understand the meaning of power of attorney. Representation based on a continuing power of attorney takes effect when you are incompetent to manage your personal affairs due, for example, to an illness or mental incapacity. After that, the power of attorney will be confirmed at a local register office at the authorised representative's request. When preparing the power of attorney, we recommend that you consult an expert, such as legal services provided by your OP cooperative bank.

Please contact your own OP cooperative bank
