The fire safety of working machines – how to avoid accidents?
Ensure fire safety by inspecting the machines regularly. Maintenance and inspections must be regular and include an assessment of fire risks. As an example, the hoses and electrical wiring of a swivel joint must be inspected weekly, and the joint needs to be kept clean of rocks and branches that could damage the hoses or cause mechanical damage.
Cable connections must be implemented correctly, and the fastenings must withstand high temperatures and vibrations. Cables must never be attached to pipes or hoses that contain a flammable substance because a potential short circuit could cause a fire. It is important to use high-quality spare parts for working machines, designed for the machine in question.
With these methods, you can considerably decrease the risk of fire:
- Inspect electrical equipment. The regular inspection of working machines ensures that there is no wear or damage in the cables. Batteries must be attached correctly and their surroundings must be properly ventilated. Cables must be inspected frequently, and all cables must have protective tubes. Wiring harnesses must be protected against wear, and their connections must be inspected. The alternator must be well attached, and the belt tension must be correct.
- Keep the engine compartment clean. Ensure cleanliness, because dirt, grease and dust can easily ignite on hot parts.
- Carry out maintenance for fuel systems. Check that there are no leaks in the hoses or connections.
- The exhaust piping system must be airtight, and heat shields must be in place. The diesel particulate filter may cause problems if it is not handled correctly. During regeneration, it is important to ensure that the machine is in a safe place with no flammable materials.
- Ensure that fire extinguishers are available. Fire extinguishers are the primary means to prevent a fire from spreading. Remember to inspect the fire extinguishers regularly.
The training of employees is a part of fire safety. It is important for everyone who uses the machines to know how to prevent a fire and how to act in a case of an emergency. Correct ways of working decrease risks and improve the safety of employees and the worksite.
The operating instructions must be followed even with minor disturbances.

Prevention is the primary means of fire protection, but you also need to prepare for situations where a fire occurs.
Every working machine that weighs more than 3,000 kg should have at least two easily available, frost-proof hand-held fire extinguishers (34A233B).
In particularly risky working environments, such as sawmills and power plants, fixed fire extinguishing systems are required that automatically react to a fire and suppress it before it spreads.
Inspection and cleaning of the engine compartment of a working machine is particularly important under conditions that involve dust or other fire hazards. Liquids and leaks create a fire hazard. Therefore, detecting fuel, oil and hydraulic oil leaks is a central part of fire safety.
Ensure the effective operation of the fire extinguishing equipment through regular inspections. Hand-held fire extinguishers must be in working order and serviced at least once a year. Fixed fire extinguishing systems must be tested and serviced as instructed by the manufacturer.
A fully automatic fire extinguishing system approved by Pohjola Insurance includes a control panel, an activation circuit, alarms (optical and acoustic), a tank for fire-extinguishing agent, distribution piping with nozzles and manual activation devices.
The machine must have one activation device next to the driver's seat and another outside the machine. Mining machines must have two external activation devices. The tank for fire-extinguishing agent is always installed outside the protected area.
The system must meet the requirements of the SP 4912 testing standard (at least rating C3A) and have at least three litres of fire-extinguishing agent per gross cubic metre to be protected, unless the testing results call for a larger amount. Wood chippers and wood crushers must have at least double the amount of fire-extinguishing agent per gross cubic metre to be protected.
Autonomic working machines must be fitted with a fixed fire extinguishing system that protects the engine compartment components, hoses, tanks, electrical components and cables.
The amount of fire-extinguishing agent must be six litres per cubic metre to protect, and the detection system must be installed so that it covers the whole engine space. The hoses of the hydraulic system of an autonomic working machine must be equipped with a fire protection shield and the electrical system must have a monitoring system installed.
The system must be fully automatic, but an activation delay of maximum 10 seconds can be allowed for it. If the main power of the machine has been switched off, there must be no delay.
The installation firm must provide the following documents:
- An installation certificate that indicates that the system meets Pohjola Insurance's requirements (alternatively, SBF-127:17).
- A risk analysis that described the areas to be protected, the locations of nozzles and the gross volume.
- Operating and maintenance instructions.
In addition, the driver and operator must receive instructions on the operation and use of the system in case of an accident.
Approved equipment suppliers: Dafo and Fogmaker.
Insurance and fire safety
Pohjola Insurance has certain requirements for the fire safety of working machines. Failure to meet the requirements may have an impact on the granting of insurance compensation. The requirements include the use of approved fire extinguishing systems and their regular inspections, for example. In addition, every working machine operator must ensure the working condition of the machines' safety devices and the fire safety of the worksite.
The company's management is responsible for the safety of the work. Good occupational safety requires providing clear instructions and supervising that they are observed. An insurance company's specialists can help evaluate whether your working machines meet the fire safety requirements, as well as provide recommendations for anticipating fire safety risks.
Machines that are used in conditions that involve dust or other fire hazards must be equipped with a fixed and fully automatic fire extinguishing system approved by Pohjola Insurance. The working condition of the fire extinguishing system must be ensured before start-up, the machines' engine compartments must be cleaned daily, and the system must be serviced at least once a year according to the manufacturer's instructions.
The maintenance work performed must be recorded in a maintenance or service log, and a report on each inspection must be drawn up. When ordering a new forestry machine, for example, please ensure when placing the order that a fully automatic fire extinguishing system is installed. If the working machine is not equipped with a fully automatic fire extinguishing system, we will charge 25% of the loss amount as a special deductible in the event of fire damage.
Here's how to ensure the fire safety of working machines
Ensuring the fire safety of working machines includes several actions that together decrease the risk of fires and accidents. The fire safety checklist helps you get started with the anticipation of risks.
- Regularly check the electrical equipment, fuel systems and engine compartments of the machines.
- Clean the working machines and remove any flammable substances, such as dust and grease.
- Ensure that every machine has a functioning hand-held fire extinguisher and, if necessary, a fixed fire extinguishing system.
- Train the employees in fire safety and ensure that they are familiar with the emergency procedures.
