What is tow insurance?
Tow insurance is a separate supplementary insurance for trucks and buses that covers situations requiring the vehicle to be towed.
Under the insurance terms and conditions, the insurance compensates for extra costs incurred by the interruption of travel already begun when the interruption is due to motor vehicle malfunction or damage.
In this context, a motor vehicle refers to the tractor unit insured under this policy. In a technical malfunction of the tractor unit, the insurance covers not only the towing of the tractor unit but also the towing of the trailer connected to it.
In connection with Maxi and Medium Motor Insurance, tow insurance is a separately agreed supplementary insurance policy for trucks and buses. Tow insurance does not have an age limit and is valid everywhere in Europe and non-European Green Card countries, excluding non-European regions of Russia.
What does tow insurance cover?
Compensation for vehicle towing expenses
The insurance covers the expenses incurred by towing a vehicle rendered unroadworthy due to a technical malfunction to the nearest repair shop in which the malfunction or damage sustained by the vehicle can be repaired.
The insurance compensates for the expenses of transporting a trailer that was connected to the tractor unit at the time of the accident from the accident site to the same place as the tractor unit when the tractor unit malfunction or damage requires towing that is compensable under the insurance terms and conditions.
Towing expenses are covered in the amount of up to 5,000 euros per insurance event. Tow insurance has no deductible in losses that occur in Finland. In accidents that occur abroad, the deductible is 350 euros per insurance event.
Pohjola Insurance has the right to designate the service provider in losses that require towing. Towing or roadside assistance must be ordered from a partner designated by the insurance company at claimhelp.pohjola.fi, or by calling the Pohjola vehicle emergency service on 0303 0303. The aforementioned expenses are covered up to the contract price of Pohjola Insurance’s towing service partner.
Compensation for additional travel and other expenses when the damage occurs in Finland
Tow insurance covers the vehicle driver's travel expenses from the scene of the accident to their home town, point of departure or destination if travel cannot continue because:
- the time required to repair the damaged vehicle or restore its roadworthiness is deemed so long that the vehicle must remain at the garage, and using other means to continue travel is necessary
- a locked vehicle was stolen and the trip must be continued by other means.
Another alternative is to compensate for the accommodation expenses incurred by having to wait for the vehicle repairs up to the amount of the travel expenses. The travel and transportation expenses using the cheapest means of transport are compensated for up to the costs of travelling home. The maximum amount of the driver’s additional travel and other expenses to be compensated for is 200 euros per insurance event.
Compensation for additional travel and accommodation expenses abroad
If the repairs to restore a motor vehicle into a condition that complies with traffic safety regulations take no more than three working days, the insurance covers any extra costs incurred by accommodation.
If repairing the vehicle to a condition required by traffic safety takes more than three working days, or a locked vehicle is stolen and missing for more than 24 hours, the insurance covers the driver's travel expenses from the scene of the loss to the driver's home town, destination or point of departure. A requirement for the payment of compensation is that it was necessary to continue the trip using another means of transport.
The travel and transportation expenses using the cheapest means of transport are compensated for up to the costs of travelling home. The maximum amount of the driver’s additional travel and other expenses to be compensated for is 1,000 euros per insurance event. In accidents that occur abroad, the deductible is 350 euros per insurance event.
