How to use your payment card safely

As a rule, card payment is a secure way of paying at checkouts or online as long as you exercise normal levels of care and caution when using a card. Keep your card and its PIN safe, set spending and withdrawal limits for your card, and check your card transactions regularly.

Using cards and PINs carefully

  • Learn the card's PIN by heart and destroy the letter which the bank sent to inform you of the PIN, if any. Do not write your PIN on your card or elsewhere.
  • You can check your forgotten PIN whenever necessary free of charge by logging into the op.fi service or OP-mobile. Select Omat kortit (My cards) under Rahat (Money) and there the card for which you need a PIN. Then, go to Kortin asetukset (Card settings) and select Tarkista tunnusluku (Check the PIN).
  • Never let anyone else use your card or reveal the PIN to another person. The bank's staff or the authorities will never ask for your payment instrument identifiers, such as a username or password for online banking, full card number or card PIN.
  • Only use your card details when paying something by yourself. Stay alert and never confirm a transaction with Mobile key or a key code if you are unsure about the transaction or do not recognise it.
  • Never leave your card unattended, for example, in a car, hotel room or on a table in a restaurant. If your own carelessness contributes to fraudulent use of your card, you will be personally liable for any losses. You should never keep your card's PIN in the same place as your card.
  • When you get a new card, destroy the old one by cutting it in half across the chip and magnetic stripe.

Setting security limits for your card

You can set daily spending and withdrawal limits for cash withdrawals, card payments made with a card reader and for purchases made online and in applications. Set the limits on both the credit and debit facility. Spending and withdrawal limits do not include any account transfers and bill payments made using the credit facility via OP's digital services.

You can set and change the limits via OP's digital services according to need. The new limits will take effect immediately.

In addition, you can set a transaction limit to restrict card payments in any one day.

Monitoring of card transactions and incorrect claims

Monitor your card and account transactions to catch any cases of fraud at the earliest possible stage.

If you find that your bank statement or credit card bill has card transactions that you were unaware of, cancel your card without delay by calling the OP Deactivation Service, which is open 24/7, at 0100 0555 (local/mobile network rate). Note that the name of the store where you made a purchase is often different from the name shown in the itemisation of transactions. So, also check the paid amounts and dates.

After you have reported the unknown card transactions to the police, you can file a complaint, or a request to investigate, about the card transactions. A claim settlement decision will be taken only after the complaint is processed.

  • Do not use an ATM if you notice people loitering nearby. Also, allow others to use ATMs in privacy.
  • When entering your PIN, cover the keyboard from prying eyes.
  • If you feel unsafe, press the red Stop button instead of entering your PIN. Remove your card and withdraw cash later.
  • If you notice something suspicious at an ATM, please contact the bank, ATM operator or the police.

  • Check the sum before you enter your PIN or give your signature.
  • When entering your PIN, cover the keyboard from prying eyes.
  • You can use contactless payment to pay for small purchases without using your PIN. This avoids the possibility of others seeing your PIN as you pay.
  • Every now and then a payment terminal will request that you insert your card and enter your PIN even for purchases of less than 50 euros. This is to ensure that the card is being used by the original cardholder.
  • The number and total value of contactless payments without a PIN is restricted so that the card cannot be used to run up huge charges in an unauthorised person’s hands.
  • Be prepared to prove your identity – this is in your own interests.
  • Try to avoid situations where your card is out of your sight.
  • Ensure that you get your card back after payment.
  • Keep the receipt/sales slip and compare it with your bank statement or card bill.
  • Dispose of old receipts/sales slips carefully.

When you pay purchases online, use online stores with Verified by Visa or MasterCard Identity Check as a payment option. These services make paying online more secure as both the merchant and shopper are reliably identified.
